Millet Crop

Millet:

.Millet are some of the oldest of cultivated crops. The term millet is applied to various grass crops whose seeds are harvested for food or feed. The five millet species of commercial importance are proso, foxtail, barnyard, browntop and pearl. Examples :- Jowar, bajra and ragi are the important millets grown in India.

  • Millet is also counted in coarse cereals and is actually produced under dry conditions even than jowar.
  • Geographical conditions for millet should be sandy soil, rainfall from 50 cm to 70 cm, temperature from 25°C to 35°C.
  • Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Haryana are the major producing states of millet.
  • Jowar - Jowar is Also Known as Sorghum. It is rich in Pottasium, phosporus and Calcium with small amounts of irons and sodium.It is the third most important food crop with respect to area and production. It is a rain fed crop mostly grown in the moist area which do not needs much irrigation . Maharashta is the Largest producer of jowar followed By Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh And Madhya Pradesh .
